Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has emphasised the need for diplomatic pressure to stifle North Korea's nuclear ambitions in a visit to the South Korean-North Korean border.

Joined by Defence Minister Marise Payne, Ms Bishop's visit is for a third round of talks to diffuse tension in the region.
