Craig Wright, an Australian businessman, said Monday that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, bitcoins pseudonymous, elusive creator.

The revelation shook up the bitcoin world, prompting immediate debate about whether Mr. Wrights claims are true. News outlets and analysts previously have speculated about the inventor of the stateless cryptocurrency, but never has anyone created such a stir by claiming to be its inventor.

Mr. Wright, a computer scientist and engineer who has been the subject of increasing speculation regarding bitcoins origin, made the claim in a posting on his website and in interviews with the BBC, The Economist and GQ Magazine.
