Call to reform race hate speech laws to protect Muslims, other religions

Controversial clause 18C of the Anti Discrimination Act is under scrutiny once more, as Islamic leaders call for it to be broadened to defend hate speech based on religion.


Policy makers say section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act -- forbidding offending or intimidating someone based on race or culture -- is already a danger to democracy.

Liberal senator James Paterson is a member of the Australian Human Rights Committee.

He says the recent court case brought by Aboriginal woman Cindy Prior against three Queensland University of Technology students over alleged racial hatred has re-ignited the debate.
