General Secretary of Cao Dai religious sector Hua Phi, a resident of Duc Trong District, Lam Dong Province, said he had been hit by strangers and cut off his beard last week.
He was hit so serious that his family had to sneak him to Saigon to get treatment after being stopped several times.
He told SBS Vietnamses about feelings after the attack.
