The leader of Family First in South Australia says his party is in good shape as it prepares to disband and merge with Senator Cory Bernardi's Australian Conservatives.

Family First's leader in South Australia, Dennis Hood and Robert Brokenshire who are members of the Upper House will now join Australian Conservatives.

But Senator Lucy Gichuhi will remain as an independent voice although she has not ruled out joining the new political grouping.

Senator Bernardi says talk of an amalgamation started before last week's decision by the High Court which confirmed Lucy Gichuhi as the Family First senator for South Australia to replace Bob Day.
