Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton says he's considering "several" applications from white South African farmers for humanitarian status in Australia.

Mr Dutton says the farmers -- allegedly persecuted because of land disputes -- need urgent protection in Australia, and that he has the government's backing to offer them fast-tracked visas.

It was reported on Tuesday South Africa's Foreign Ministry had welcomed what they called Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop's "retraction" of the offer.

But Mr Duttton has told Sky News no such retraction has been issued.
