Sydney-based doctor Munjed Al Muderis is a pioneering surgeon giving amputees the ability to walk. He is also a refugee.
He arrived in Australia by boat after being forced to flee Iraq for refusing to amputate the ears of Iraqi draft evaders in 1999.
In SBS's continuing First Day series, Dr Muderis remembers the day he was released from immigration detention.
