The Federal Government is defending its support for growth in Australia's coal industry despite dire warnings from United Nations climate experts on fossil fuels' effect on the climate.

The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says greenhouse gas levels are the highest they have been in 800-thousand years.

It says recent increases are mostly due to burning fossil fuels and the Earth is on a path for at least a four-degree warming by the year 2100.

But the Government says it is on track to play its part in reducing global emissions without closing down the coal and other fossil-fuel industries.
