Human Rights Watch Human Rights Watch today issued a statement calling for Vietnam to abolish immediately all charges against the refugees who were returned to Vietnam by the Australian government last year.


In addition the organization also asked the Australian government to intervene because Canberra Hanoi had promised no reprisals of repatriated refugees.

Vietnam News said on May 26, 4 new boatpeople will be trialled in Binh Thuan court under article 275 of the penal code Vietnam on charges of organizing illegal smuggling. In April, the court also sentenced a total of 10 years in prison for 4 different boat for the same offense.

Phan Bach asked Mr Doan Viet Trung, representative for organization VOICE, which stands for Presentation Conscience Initiative Overseas Vietnamese, who have consistently lobbied for the Vietnam boat people in Australia returned.
