Foster carers provide a home for children who are unable to live safely with their own families, through providing a secure, safe environment that caters for the physical and emotional needs of young people from birth to 18 years of age.

Across Australia there are more than 43,000 children in out-of-home care - a 15 per cent increase since 2011.

Family and Community Services NSW say the reason for the increase is that children are not returning home. In previous years children would be restored to their families more often than they currently are. The result, more children staying in out-of-home care for longer. This includes children from Indigenous and different cultural backgrounds as well as children who identify as LGBTI.

With increasing amounts of kids going into care in Australia there has never been more of a need for foster carers, but with a lack of funding and more alarming stories of abuse and neglect, how do we keep these children safe?

Today is National Sorry Day, an Australia-wide observance day held on 26 May each year. It gives people the opportunity to show support towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.
