Australia's Department of Immigration says it has nothing to say about an alleged attack on an Iranian refugee in Nauru, other than it is a matter for the government of Nauru.

The Refugee Action Coalition says a 34-year-old Iranian was hit on the head and attacked by two Nauruans at the weekend, suffering injuries that required eight stitches.

But Nauru police have accused the refugee of making up the story to get media attention.
