Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has been awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end his country's 52 year old civil war with left wing rebels.

The Nobel committee in Oslo praised him for his efforts in striking a peace accord with Farc rebels that was signed after four years of negotiations.

But the agreement was not accepted with Colombians narrowly rejecting the accord in a referendum.
