Pakistan has passed a law that closes a loophole allowing people involved in what are known as honour killings to go free.

The legislation introduces strict punishment for those convicted, tougher than for ordinary murders.

More than a thousand women were killed last year in honour killings, often by fathers, brothers or husbands.

The killings were prompted by acts such as a woman marrying the man of her own choice or being seen sitting with a man.

Many more cases go unreported.
