The Queensland government has abolished the so-called gay panic defence that has allowed the killing of homosexual men to be treated as manslaughter, not murder.

The state's LGBTI* community has long campaigned for the law to clarified and hundreds of thousands of people signed a petition pushing for the change.

Australia's Human Rights Commissioner has praise Queensland and it leaves only one jurisdiction in the country that still allows the defence.
