In the United States, the Democratic National Convention has opened with a glittering show of unity as the party consolidates behind its presumptive presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton.
Bernie Sanders, the socialist senator from Vermont who stood against Ms Clinton in the primary elections, has strongly urged his supporters to back his former rival.
The party is keen to avoid the lingering divisions evident in opposition Republican ranks following the formal nomination of Donald Trump as their candidate.
