Kim Jong-yang has become the first South Korean elected president of the international police organisation Interpol. His appointment has come as a surprise after Russian police general Alexander Prokopchuk ((pro-KOP-chuk)) appeared to be the leading candidate. The United States and European countries say they are pleased after being concerned a victory for Mr Prokopchuk would have swung the organisation under Russian president Vladimir Putin's control.
