Iraqi troops have reached the city limits of the northern town of Tal Afar [tahl AH-fuh], three days into an internationally-backed operation to take back territory from IS militants.
The city, around 150 kilometres east of the border with Syria, is one of a handful of IS strongholds left in Iraq.
