The principle of parliamentary privilege could be put to the test as early as next week following the seizure of thousands documents from Parliament House in Canberra.

Federal Labor says it's confident it can prevent the Australian Federal Police from releasing the documents, seized in relation to leaked correspondence about the National Broadband Network.

Police executed a search warrant at Parliament House but the material will remain under lock and key until the Senate can determine whether it is covered by parliamentary privilege.
