United States President Donald Trump has appointed a new defence secretary to replace Jim Mattis.
The appointment comes two months earlier than General Mattis' planned departure and is being seen as a public spat by Mr Trump over General Mattis' resignation letter and its rebuke of his foreign policy.
Criticism continues to mount over the President's decision to withdraw troops from Syria.
