Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called a United States decision to suspend visa services for Turkish citizens a "saddening" development.

The move follows the arrest of a US consulate employee in Turkey.

Turkey has stopped visa services in the United States in a tit-for-tat move as relations between the two countries quickly spiral downward.

The United States had suspended the issuing of temporary visas for Turkish citizens after a US consulate employee was arrested in Turkey last week.
