United States Secretary of State John Kerry is in Russia, discussing a controversial US proposal to coordinate military operations in Syria.
The United States is believed to want a joint military command centre and coordinated air attacks on the self-proclaimed Islamic State, or IS, and the Al-Nusra Front.
The Al-Nusra Front is al-Queda's Syrian affiliate.
Mr Kerry has expressed optimism the countries could work together during a meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin before talks with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
