Human rights defender Tran Thi Nga will appear in the the Appeal Court hearing on December 22, five months after the first trial in which she was convicted on allegation of “conducting anti-state propaganda” under Article 88 of the country’s 1999 Penal Code and sentenced to nine years in prison and four years under house arrest afterward.
On July 25, 2017, the People’s Court in Ha Nam Province sentenced Ms. Tran Thi Ngat, the mother of two young children, to nine years’ imprisonment followed by an additional five years of house arrest under Article 88 of the Vietnamese Penal Code for “spreading propaganda against the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam”.
Her sentence is related to articles and videos she posted online in which she condemned human rights violations committed by Vietnamese authorities.
