Adani says it is working to meet a list of requests from the Queensland government after its plans to protect an endangered bird at the site of its proposed coal mine were rejected.

Officials from the state Labor government's environment department have told Adani its plan for managing the black-throated finch fails to meet environmental requirements.

The Indian mining company has been told it can submit a new or revised plan in a blow Adani has blasted as an overreach.

It is planning to submit plans that meet the department's requests, including that it work with individuals with post-doctoral qualifications.

The Morrison government has accused state and federal Labor of frustrating the project to appeal to environmentally-minded voters in urban electorates.

Both state and federal Labor have said the mine must stack up economically and environmentally.
