Thousands of jobs are at risk under a plan by NSW government-owned electricity network business Ausgrid to close depots, sell training facilities and cut apprenticeships, the Electrical Trades Union says.

A leaked document has revealed Ausgrid's desire to "gut the company" before 50.4 per cent is sold as part of the government's electricity privatisation policy, ETU assistant secretary Dave McKinley said on Saturday.

Earlier in September it was announced that 1100 Ausgrid workers around Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast, would lose their jobs in the first of three rounds of cuts.
