An elderly person is recovering in a Perth hospital after becoming the 10th person diagnosed with meningococcal disease in Western Australia this year.

The Department of Health says the patient is suffering from the potentially life-threatening serogroup Y strain of the disease.

A total of 46 cases were reported in 2017, which is double the number reported in 2016 and more than any year since 2005, with strains of W and Y infections well above the long-term average of less than one case a year.
