2 dead, 3 missing in Hurricane Newton

Two people have died and three are missing after a prawn boat capsized in strong waves caused by Hurricane Newton in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.

Two people have died and three are missing after a prawning boat capsized in strong waves caused by Hurricane Newton in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.

Los Cabos civil protection director Marco Antonio Vazquez says two bodies have been found on Las Barrancas beach, near Cabo Pulmo at the southern end of the northwestern Mexican state.

The boat didn't follow safety instructions, he added.

The Mexican Secretariat of the Interior said Interior Secretary Miguel Angel Osorio had ordered a preventive suspension of activities in ports and airports in Baja California Sur.

It added 195 people from 7 rural communities have been displaced in the city of La Paz and 1,526 people have been displaced in Los Cabos and are now living in 17 temporary shelters.

The National Coordinator of Civil Protection, Luis Felipe, said on Twitter there have been no reports of people killed or missing although some damages to road and power infrastructure in La Paz have been reported.
