While many countries in Africa are not unfamiliar with adversity, 2011 has seen many of the continent's crises coming to an end.

After years of conflict, a new country was formed for the people of Sudan.

In the Horn of Africa, the ongoing food crisis gained widespread international attention after the United Nations officially declared a famine.

And for Ivory Coast, their long-disputed leader left office and now faces charges of human rights abuses.

Aileen Phillips looks back at the last year in Africa.
