2011 has been a year of change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander politics and representation across the country.

The new National Congress of Australia's First Peoples has elected representatives, and further steps have been taken towards a referendum on recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia's Constitution.

A push for autonomy in the Torres Strait has also been renewed.

SBS Radio's Clare Atkinson takes a look back at the year's developments.
