2011 takes its toll on Somalia

According to the UN, almost 300,000 Somalis have been forced to flee the country this year alone, while 250,000 remain in danger of starvation.

According to the UN, almost 300,000 Somalis have been forced to flee the country this year alone.

It says three regions of south Somalia are still in a state of famine, and close on 250,000 people are in danger of dying of starvation.


Many have fled to neighbouring Kenya in a desperate search for food and water.

Somalia, ravaged by nearly uninterrupted civil war for the past two decades was also the Horn of Africa country hardest hit by this year's bruising drought, AFP reports.
