The photo taken by freelance photographer Johnny Huu Nguyen shows Portland Police Seargeant Bret Barnum, hugging 12-year-old Devonte Hart.
The boy had been holding a "Free Hugs" sign when seargeant Barnum noticed it and started a conversation with Hart about school and life. At the end of the talk, Barnum pointed to Hart's sign and asked: “Do I get one of those?”
Barnum said he noticed the boy and wondered what was wrong, so struck up a conversation with him.
"Knowing how he struggled with police, his bravery and courage to catch my eye and approach me were impressive," Barnum told AP news agency. "And it’s a blessing for me that I didn’t miss an opportunity to impact this child."
Hart said the moment was about "listening to each other, facing fears with an open heart."
Devonte Hart's adopted mother, Jennifer Hart, posted a message on social media, saying her son had faced with issues of police brutality and racism.
Posted on Instagram, the photo has been praised by social media users for promoting peace during a time of increased tensions.
"Thank you for publishing the stunning photo that both breaks the heart and lifts up the soul," wrote Instagram user lapresas.
Another user wrote of being moved to tears.
"My heart broke and mended at the same time with this photo. Beautiful," Instagram user tammyliaa posted.
Photographer Johnny Nguyen said he hoped the photo helped spread the message of compassion.
"I think my picture helps people understand the real answer is love and compassion," he said.
