An elderly man has died after falling 10 metres off a cliff at Kangaroo Island, off South Australia.

Police say a member of the public heard the 73-year-old local cry out for help while he was at the base of Chapman Terrace just before 2pm on Friday.

He was rescued and taken to Kingscote Hospital, where he later died.
