A "colossal" four kilogram gold nugget worth more than $250,000 has been unearthed in Victoria.
The nugget was found at the far southern edge of Central Victoria's Golden Triangle by an experienced prospector who is remaining anonymous, according to metal detector manufacturer Minelab.
The prospector told Minelab he thought the nugget was rubbish at first, buried about 30 centimetres below the ground.
"As I began to scrape away the clay and dig deeper, I really couldn't believe my eyes - this wasn't an old piece of steel in front of me," he said.
"I had just unearthed a colossal gold nugget - a once in a lifetime find! I was in total disbelief as I didn't think nuggets of this size were still around."

After washing the nugget, the discoverer covered it in aluminium foil and hid it in his oven on the first night.
The man has made a pact with two of his closest mates, who are also prospectors, to split the proceeds of any large gold finds.
He told Minelab he plans on purchasing a van and travelling Australia with his share of the windfall.
