Govt must go further on super: Greens

The Greens will use its numbers in the Senate to pursue measures to make the superannuation system fairer beyond what the government is proposing.

The Greens have no problem with the Turnbull government's plan to put a $500,000 lifetime cap on non-concessional superannuation contributions, a proposal which has provoked controversy among coalition backbenchers.

But the minor party wants the government to go further in making the super system fairer, such as people earning less than $30,000 paying no tax on their contributions, while those earning $180,000 and above paying 32 per cent rather than 15 per cent.

"We have an opportunity to actually put in place a much stronger, fairer, equitable superannuation system and the Greens will use our leverage in the Senate to try and get that," Greens senator Peter Whish-Wilson, who has just taken over the Treasury portfolio, told Sky News on Thursday.
