Out-of-form Burns to play for Australia A

Australian selectors have given Test opener Joe Burns a chance to return to form, picking him for A-series matches against India next month.

Burns was dropped for the final Test of the tour against Sri Lanka, after a miserable opening two matches netted him just 34 runs at an average of 8.50.

However he will first act as a leader in each of the four-day matches for Australia A against their Indian counterparts, starting September 8 in Brisbane.

"Joe Burns will join both matches to give him further opportunity," head of selectors Rod Marsh said.

"And also have the chance to play a leadership role as vice-captain in the first match, then captain of the second."

Paceman Jackson Bird will also be given the chance to play for the A-side in the second match beginning on September 15, after he failed to play a Test in Sri Lanka despite forming part of the squad.

Peter Handscomb, who is considered a chance of selection for next year's Indian series, will captain the side in the first match after a scoring a century in the A-Team's most recent four-day match against South Africa earlier this month.

Australia A squad for first match: Peter Handscomb (capt), Joe Burns, Cameron Bancroft, Travis Dean, David Moody, Kane Richardson, Chadd Sayers, Marcus Stoinis, Mitch Swepson, Beau Webster, Sam Whiteman, Daniel Worrall.

Australia A squad for second match: Joe Burns (capt), Kurtis Patterson, Jackson Bird, Hilton Cartwright, Travis Dean, Sam Heazlett, Jon Holland, David Moody, Kane Richardson, Chadd Sayers, Beau Webster, Sam Whiteman.
