A close to five-hour siege in Melbourne's southeast has ended, with a man surrendering peacefully to police.

The man has been taken to hospital for assessment, hours after heavily armed police officers surrounded a unit on Glen Huntly Road in Elwood on Monday afternoon.

The Herald Sun reported police had to smash a window to better negotiate with him, while other media outlets suggested the man was armed with a knife.

Police told AAP they would not confirm if the man was armed or other operational details, but said the man was alone in the unit.

Police were called to the unit just before 4pm, with the road blocked during the operation.
