A backpack set on fire and thrown underneath a car has caused two explosions in Adelaide.

Police say CCTV shows an unknown man arrive on a mountain bike before starting the fire in the Salisbury Park driveway just before 5.30am on Sunday.

The backpack, containing flammable substances, caused an explosion and when the victim tried to douse the flames with a hose it caused another explosion.

No one was injured.
