Santa Claus should pack a pair of shorts when planning his visit to Melbourne, with hot weather predicted over the Christmas period.

Senior meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology, Stephen King says temperatures are looking warmer than originally thought.

"We have at least three to four days of hot weather coming up," Mr King said on Tuesday.

"So don't forget to leave out a bowl of water for the reindeer."

He said Christmas Eve would begin the hot spell, with 32C expected for Santa's arrival.
