Workers at Holden’s Adelaide-based manufacturing plant have been told the carmaker will shut down operations on October 20.

The company will retain a presence in Australia as a sales group and vehicle importer.

Holden spokesman Richard Phillips said the company's overriding priority is giving employees and suppliers advance notice and providing certainty.

Holden says it will build more than 30,000 vehicles between now and the plant's closure.

The company currently employs more than 1000 workers at its Elizabeth plant, and has been running a transition service to help employees find new roles.

The Elizabeth plant has been manufacturing cars for more than 60 years.

South Australia’s Automotive Transformation Minister Kyam Maher today said in a statement his thoughts are with affected workers and their families.

“Although Holden has always said production will cease at the end of this year, today is a difficult day for South Australia, workers and the automotive supply chain,” he said.

“Since Holden announced its intention to cease production, the South Australian government has worked hard to support workers to transition into training and new employment.”
