The electoral commission says it's waiting for directions from a High Court judge before conducting a special count to replace Rod Culleton in the Senate.

Mr Culleton, who represented Western Australia for Pauline Hanson's One Nation, was found on Friday to have been ineligible to run for parliament due to a larceny conviction.

An Australian Electoral Commission spokesman told AAP it was now awaiting directions, to be made by a single High Court judge, as to the timing and method of the special count.
