Roos want more than toughness in AFL

Defender Jamie Macmillan says North Melbourne won't be focused on physically intimidating the Western Bulldogs in their Good Friday AFL clash.

From cult figure Braydon Preuss to Majak Daw and the soon-to-return Mason Wood, North Melbourne's tall timber is piling up fast.

But size - and toughness - won't be everything for the Kangaroos when they face the Western Bulldogs in the AFL's inaugural Good Friday clash.

The Roos are yet to taste victory after three rounds but have blooded several youngsters, with 21-year-old Preuss the best of the lot.

A 206cm and 109kg behemoth with a rugby league background, Preuss has adjusted quickly to senior football and hasn't been afraid to play on the edge.

The Bulldogs (2-1) are missing first-choice ruck Jordan Roughead and have had mixed results with the combination of Tom Boyd and Tom Campbell.

However defender Jamie Macmillan says it would be folly to focus on physically intimidating the reigning premiers.

"We'll just ask Preussy in particular to play (his) own game and whatever that looks like, it looks like," Macmillan said on Tuesday.

"It won't be a plan for us because sometimes it can backfire and you can fire them up a bit."

While Preuss and Todd Goldstein are likely to remain North's first-choice ruckmen, Daw has recovered from a concussion and is expected to press his claims for inclusion.

The Kangaroos could also soon be bolstered by the return of Wood, who has made a quicker-than-expected recovery from a knee injury.

Wood was tipped to be sidelined until at least round six but the exciting key forward has bounced back quickly from a minor operation to remove a loose bone fragment and could play in the VFL this weekend.

He missed most of the AFL pre-season with a hamstring complaint, having also been sidelined by injuries for much of last season.

Veteran forward Jarrad Waite (shoulder) has also recovered faster than expected and is listed as two weeks away from returning.

North have shown glimpses of form to start the season but endured some frustrating losses, particularly their one-point defeat at the hands of Geelong.

Macmillan, who was elevated to deputy vice-captain alongside Shaun Higgins in December, believes the results will soon start going their way.

"We're playing some reasonably good footy," he said.

"We're still competitive, we're fighting games out until the end and unfortunately results haven't come our way. But you can only hang in there and hopefully we'll get some reward for effort."
