The French Open tennis champions will earn $A3.1 million each after tournament director Guy Forget announced an increase in prize money of 12 per cent in 2017.

French Open organisers have increased the tennis grand slam tournament's prize money by 12 per cent to 36 million euros ($A52.4 million).

They have also narrowed the gap between the earnings of the men's and women's winners and the first-round losers.

The two champions of the second grand slam championship of 2017 will pocket 2.1 million euros ($A3.1 million) each, up 100,000 euros ($A145,500) from 2016.

First-round losers will earn 35,000 euros ($A50,900).

The figures were announced by tournament director Guy Forget a news conference.
