A Melbourne highrise apartment building has caught fire, sending thick black smoke across Southbank.

An apartment building in Melbourne's Southbank has caught fire, with images on social media showing a blaze on a balcony several stories up.

The MFB has at least five vehicles attending and the blaze was listed as under control at 5.13pm.

The fire started on Wednesday afternoon, sending thick black smoke across the inner city suburb from the highrise building on Kavanagh St.
