Patients moved from troubled SA home

The South Australian government says all patients have now been moved from a troubled Adelaide nursing home.

All residents at a troubled Adelaide nursing home catering to elderly dementia patients have now been moved to new accommodation.

South Australian Mental Health Minister Leesa Vlahos says the relocation effectively decommissions the Makk and McLeay wards at the state-run Oakden nursing home, in line with recommendations in a recent review of the facility.

The scathing review by SA's chief psychiatrist uncovered rough handling of patients, an excessive use of restraints and a concerning level of injuries.

It prompted the government to pledge to close the facility while the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption has launched an inquiry to see if maladministration was involved.

Ms Vlahos said 26 residents from the Makk and McLeay wards had been moved from the facility, with 14 going to another state-run centre and 12 entering the wider aged care centre.

"The closure of the Makk and McLeay wards is a significant step toward remedying the issues at Oakden," she said.

"I sincerely hope the relocation assists them and their loved-ones to move forward from the unacceptable levels of care provided at Oakden."
