West Australian paceman Andrew Tye has been called up to Australia's T20 international squad to face India, replacing Pat Cummins who will skip the series to rest ahead of the Ashes.

Tye, 30, will get a chance to add to his five T20 internationals in the three-match series which kicks off in Ranchi on October 7.

Cummins will be sent home after the two remaining one-day internationals, with the series wrapping up in Nagpur on Sunday.

The exciting quick has remained injury free in an extended period of cricket, but Australia want to manage his workload ahead of the three Sheffield Shield fixtures which lead up to the first Test against England on November 23.

Tye is no stranger to Indian conditions having played six matches for the Gujarat Lions in this year's IPL.
