2018 AFL grand final stats

The 2018 AFL grand final was remarkable for several reasons.

These are the stats that mattered on the last Saturday of September.

*West Coast held the lead for a total of nine minutes and four seconds.

*Both teams were level on 8.7 (55) at three-quarter time. The scores haven't been level at the final break of a grand final since Geelong defeated Collingwood in 1937.

*It was the closest grand final since the 2010 draw between Collingwood and St Kilda.

*Eagles midfielder Luke Shuey won the Norm Smith medal. He became the third player to manage 30 disposals, eight tackles and a goal in a grand final. Simon Black (2003) and Lenny Hayes (2010) are the others.

*West Coast speedster Lewis Jetta became the 30th player in the sport's history to win a premiership with two clubs, having been part of Sydney's 2012 success.

*Collingwood booted the opening five goals of the game. The Magpies haven't kicked five goals in the first quarter of a grand final since 1939, when they managed 6.5 (and also lost, to Melbourne).

*A crowd of 100,022 packed into the MCG, one more than the 2017 grand-final attendance.

*Josh Kennedy finished with 3.2. The remarkably consistent key forward has kicked at least one goal in every single match he has played since managing 0.0 in the 2015 grand final.

*West Coast became the first side to go undefeated in Victoria throughout an entire AFL season. They finished 5-0, having also beaten Western Bulldogs (round two), Carlton (round five), Hawthorn (round 10), Collingwood (round 17).

*Collingwood icon Nathan Buckley has now played and coached a combined total of 442 games for zero premierships. Nobody has played/coached so many matches without celebrating a flag.
