Twenty-one people have died in a road accident involving three buses in central Ghana, local radio stations say.

A bus driver attempted to overtake a vehicle and hit another bus near Asankare on the main highway linking the capital Accra with the second-largest city Kumasi. A third bus then crashed into the other two, but its passengers were not injured.

It took rescuers several hours to remove the dead and the injured.

Fifteen passengers died at the scene and the rest in hospital. More than 10 people were in critical condition, doctors said.
