35,000 in NYC Columbus Day parade

More than 35,000 revellers have paraded through New York for the annual Columbus Day Parade, honouring the city's Italian history.

More than 35,000 people have turned out in New York for the annual Columbus Day parade, honouring the proud Italian roots of the American city.

The parade kicked off on Monday morning (local time) on Manhattan's emblematic Fifth Avenue, finishing two hours later at 72nd Street, on one side of Central Park.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, the grandson of Italian immigrants, and the city's mayor Bill de Blasio, also of Italian origin, participated in the parade which is now in its 70th year and honours Italian explorer Christopher Columbus.

Members of more than 100 organisations, 35 floats and some 15 marching bands moved along Fifth Avenue in a huge mobile street party that in past years has featured celebrities including Frank Sinatra and Sophia Loren.
