36ers better than last year: Wright

There's better chemistry at the Adelaide 36ers this season, according to coach Joey Wright as his second-placed side look towards the NBL finals.

Adelaide coach Joey Wright is convinced the 36ers are better equipped than last year's team to capture the club's first NBL title in 16 years.

The 36ers clinched second spot on the ladder with Sunday's 24-point drubbing of the Illawarra Hawks in Wollongong, earning home court advantage in a best-of-three semi-final series with either New Zealand or two-time reigning champions Perth.

Melbourne United wrapped up the minor premiership on Sunday.

Last year Adelaide claimed the minor premiership before being upset in the semi-finals.

Wright is confident this team is ready to challenge for the crown.

"One of the things we wanted to do when we rejigged this team was provide some depth," Wright said.

"We have some guys who we feel can come in and have a real impact. I'm real happy with what our bench is doing and what our starters are doing.

"I just feel like we're a better ball club than we were last year, regardless of where we finished on the table last year.

"We've got better balance, we communicate better with one another. We've just got better chemistry."

The 36ers' record stands at 17-10 heading into next week's final-round home game against Brisbane.

Melbourne United locked up top spot with Sunday's comfortable win over the New Zealand Breakers in Auckland.

"Our depth is a lot better this year," Sixers guard Nathan Sobey said.

"At times this year some of us have struggled and they've picked us right up. It's been like that all year and it's been a real positive for us."

The Hawks have lost 16 games and can still finish with the wooden spoon.

Only one Illawarra player - centre AJ Ogilvy - is under contract with the club next season, and that is optional.

"It's going to be a big off-season," Hawks coach Rob Beveridge said.

"We'll sit down with the players and work out what they want to do with their futures, and there's going to be some tough decisions made.

"I turned up for work every day and I can look in the mirror and know I gave it my best shot, and I can probably say that every one of the players did too."
