4.9 magnitude quake shakes Japan

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake has jolted Japan off the coast of Fukushima but no tsunami warnings have been activated.

An earthquake measuring 4.9 degrees on the Richter scale has jolted northeastern Japan.

No tsunami warning was activated, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The quake occurred at 7.37am local time and had its hypocentre 20 kilometres deep into a seabed off the coast of the province of Fukushima, according to the agency.
