40yo marathoner on track for Rio debut

Scott Westcott came second in Sunday's Australian half-marathon championships seven weeks before he debuts at the Rio Olympics aged 40.

Content with his final pre-Rio hit-out, marathon runner Scott Westcott says his 40-year-old body is on track to peak right when he makes his long-awaited Olympic debut.

Westcott came second in Sunday's Australian half marathon championships behind Sudan-born Victorian winner Duer Yoa (01:03:49).

His time of one hour five minutes and 54 seconds told him all he needed to know - that his fitness is at a good level seven weeks out from the Brazil Games marathon on August 21.

"I was pretty pleased," Westcott told AAP.

"I was able to hold a much quicker tempo than what I'll be running in Rio - that's always a positive sign, that I can run half the distance quicker than my goal pace for Rio.

"So everything's in order."

Westcott has waited more than 20 years to claim a spot on an Australian Olympic team.

Despite bettering the qualifying mark on three previous occasions dating back to the Sydney 2000 Games, he was overlooked every time by selectors.

Now, finally chosen after qualifying at last year's Berlin Marathon, the former high-school teacher will become the oldest Australian track and field athlete to make his Olympic debut.

The age factor means training a little differently, increasing his load only gradually.

"Being an older athlete I can't hold a peak for a long time," said Westcott, who juggles his training with a full-time Athletics NSW job and spending time with his wife and three children.

"I've just got to gradually increase the intensity bit by bit, week by week.

"In seven weeks' time I'll be good to go for the marathon.

"It's all about peaking on that one day."

Tasmanian Josh Harris took out third place in the half marathon championships, held as part of the Gold Coast Marathon.

Australian Olympian Eloise Wellings won the Victory Tour half marathon in Sydney on Sunday in 1:11:53.
